Growing up in Baltimore City during the 70’s I can remember each house on my block having a small garden in their back yard; my grandmother having the greenest of thumbs, could make almost anything grow. Her garden included tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, parsley and her neighbors would grow much of the same but in addition to that they would grow cabbage, watermelon, squash and collard greens. They would then harvest and exchange the fruits of their labor in the middle of the sidewalks, knocking on each other’s doors and throughout the community. What we couldn’t exchange we would buy at the local open-air street markets, stalls full of fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats, poultry and seafood. These markets are still found all over the city of Baltimore, Lafayette, Lexington, Cross Street, Fells Point, much like the world famous Pike Street Market found in Seattle Washington... |
This is where my love and passion for food began, my grandmother and her growing, my mother, who worked part-time as a cook at many restaurants in my youth while also a private duty nurse, picking up many recipes that she prepared for her clients, she shared those recipes with me and I would attempt to cook them in her absence. This started when I was nine years old and I haven’t stopped.
